Join the community on Sunday morning May 5th at South High School for the two-mile Walk and Festival "Celebrate Israel." The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. in celebration of and community support for Israel, and is followed by a family festival featuring live music and food vendors. Last week we learned about the sin of Iashon hara, speaking ill of people. We must also be careful with its corollary, "good speech." Is your praise judicious and accurate or excessive and overstated and in what context? Rashi is concerned: Will praise create warmth and esteem or envy and resentment among listeners? Referring to the Rambam, Rabbi Sacks reminds us that focused praise makes great mentors. The Mishna in Pirke Avot asks us to "raise up many disciples." How? Sacks suggests, "By acting as Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai when he praised his students, showing them their specific strengths." Praise becomes a vehicle to enhance the creative process in humans, and process ordained by God.
